Green Tea Benefits: Longevity

According to a newspaper report, people who drink a lot of green tea benefits by living longer. This was taken from a study of over 40,000 men and women in Japan.

Green tea was found to be particularly effective in fighting heart disease. Polyphenols – plant compounds known to be antioxidants – found in green tea may explain the life prolonging benefit it confers, according to the study.

The study was conducted in northeast Japan, where 80% of the population drinks green tea, and more than 50% drink 3 or more cups daily.

Those involved in the study ranged in age from 40 to 79 and had no prior record of stroke, heart disease or cancer when the study commenced in 1994.

Over the course of 11 years, those who drank at least 5 cups of green tea a day had an overall death rate of 16% lower than those who drank less than 1 cup daily.

In the initial 7 years of the study, heavy tea drinkers had a 26% lower rate of death. Such evidence greatly supports the existence of green tea benefits.
